Kismaayo is a southern Somalia city, in Lower Jubba region. A deepwater port located on the Indian Ocean.
Kismaayo is one of Somalia's main commercial and manufacturing centers. Main industries include meat, fish, turtle and leather processing. This site will highlight on what unites the people of Kismaayo more than what can potentially divide them. This site will support anything that will build the unity and brotherhood of all kismaayo residents regardless of their clan. This portal will have references to schools, universities, articles, businesses and port facilities. The site will inshaAllah also host an internet social TV and Radio programmes. It's home for visitors and residents a like. Its the start of a Dubai in the horn of Africa.
Kismaayo was greatly used as a trade center from 1872 by the sultan of Zanzibar. It was occupied in 1887 by the British and from 1927 to 1941 was part of Italian Somaliland. When the British first came to the town, they faced stiff resistance from the people of the area (Jubaland) as can be read from Here (before the existence of Kenya or Somalia).
The city Port facilities were upgraded in the 1960s.
The Population of Kismaayo was estimated as 90,000 in 1980. It has grown to over 200 000 residents since the civil war started in 1991. Its a lovely city were it not the constant takeover of the city by warlords. Its a city enough to feed the whole of Somalia if properly administered.
More about this fascinating city to come shortly ..... stay tuned.
